Quick and easy post to ensure you are ready apres surf.
You need a towel after surfing and usually I am keen to have the latest and greatest from Billabong or Quiksilver but in reality the qulaity of the towel is not that good and as I age I like to indulge in some creature comforts.
I ordered an Egyptian Cotton towel bale from House of Kelly a couple of weeks a go and boy are they soft.
Not only was the towel soft but very absorbent and not too bulky which in my opinion is great as really thick towels take an age to dry.

Urban Surfer is back
I thought i would follow up a previous post with some great news. Urban Surfer has been brought back from the dead with the help of the guys at extremepie. Not sure what the future holds but it's great to have them back.
In other news Surf fashion discount codes has had some extra functionality put in. With the credit crunch and recession looming Surf Life has done all the hard work by not only listing all the latest items but also adding any discount codes that may be available.
The beauty is that the expiry date is set in the database so once the discount code has expired it will no longer show in the post. They can therefore almost guarantee that the voucher code will work as intended saving you time and money.

Second Hand Skiwear
Polar Exchange based in Alresford, Hampshire have come up with a great idea to help families get on to the slopes for less.
Polar exchange's Directors are passionate about skiing and in 2000 came up with the concept of selling new good value skiwear and used skiwear on behalf of their owners.
Ebay as great as it is does not allow you to try things on and touch and feel the quality of secondhand skiwear. This is where Polar Exchange comes out on top. You can go to their barn in Alresford to see the entire range or you can orgaise a sale at your childrens school where you can take your old used but in good condition skiwear to sell and replace it with some new skiwear. It also allows ypu to try the skiwear on before buying removing the element of surprise you can sometimes get with eBay.
Polar Exchange cater for both parents and their children so it really is a one stop shop for all your skiwear needs helping you help the environment by recycling and saving money.
So if you just need to clear some space or want to get some new skiwear check them out at www.polarexchange.co.uk

Urban Surfer gone into Administration
It looks like one of my favourite stores has gone into administration. It's a real shame as Urban Surfer had a great looking website that was easy to use and had great product shots. When you go to www.urbansurfer.co.uk now you get a message saying that all orders after the 28th May have been cancelled and refunded.
I am hoping they will resurface in the very near future but in reality the surf industry is taking a bit of a knock this season. What with more players joining in, bricks and mortar surf shops struggling and having one last ditch attempt at keeping their business alive by going online or as per usual the strangest weather we have seen for a long time.
The weather does play a role as the good weather brings good moods and a need to spend money. The surf shops on the coast this year have a new enemy.
Petrol prices. What with the cost of fuel now at an all time high Surfers and beach goers who are the people who spend money at coastal surf shops are making sure that the weather is good and there is going to be surf when they get there. No longer can Londoners pop down to the suth coast to see f there is any surf when fuel prices are this high.
People are also looking for a deal. Surf Fashion experts at Surf Life have over 13,000 products listed now. It goes to show how many different products there are out there.
So what does the future hold. Summer needs to come and stay, Gordon Brown needs to reduce fuel duty and people need to support there local surf stores if they want them to be around next year.

ASP Top 17 Attack Duranbah at 8am for Start of Roxy Pro pres
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008) – The ladies of the ASP Top 17 will don jerseys for the opening round of the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour at Duranbah Beach this morning at 8am, kickstarting competition at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by LG.
With small surf on offer at Snapper Rocks, event organizers at the Roxy Pro opted for the punchier peaks of nearby Duranbah Beach, which is seeing surf in the two-to-three foot (1 metre) range this morning.
“We’re going to get the girls in the water at D’Bah at 8am this morning for Round 1 of the Roxy Pro,” Brooke Farris, ASP Women’s World Tour Manager, said. “Surf is in the two-to-three foot range, and it will be a great day for the girls to get their feet wet on the 2008 season.”
Reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) will begin her inaugural title defense today, doing battle against Roxy Trials Winner and last year’s runner-up Carissa Moore (HAW) and 2008 rookie Karina Petroni (USA).
Australian powerbroker Jessi Miley-Dyer has withdrawn from the event, the result of an injury sustained while competing at the Roxy Pro Women’s Surfing Festival at Phillip Island (an ASP World Qualifying Series event) last month.
“I’ve suffered a bone contusion high on the shin in my right leg,” Miley-Dyer said. “I did while competing down in Phillip Island, and I didn’t really think I’d hurt myself as bad. Basically, I’ve creased my shin, and while it’s not quite broken, I still have a few more weeks before I can get back in the water.”
Replacing Miley-Dyer will be former ASP Women’s World Tour competitor Laurina McGrath (AUS), who narrowly missed out on qualifying last season.
“It’s frustrating to be here at the event and not be able to compete,” Miley-Dyer said. “However, it’s cool that my spot goes to Laurina, who is a good friend of mine.”
When Roxy Pro competition commences, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS) will go up against Melanie Bartels (HAW) and Nicola Atherton (AUS) in the opening heat of the year.
The Roxy Pro presented by LG will be webcast LIVE via www.aspworldtour.com/roxypro

Reclaim Bank Charges in the UK
So I work 50 hours a week busting my balls and because my mortgage company decide to throw a spanner in the works and forget to take a payment I get shafted the following month with an unexpected double whammy and I go overdrawn.
Now I know what you are all thinking - in this day with online banking how could you mess up. Well I did. Now I was overdrawn by 50p.
Well no I wasn't actually. It was more like £30.50. Why?
The bank had charged me £30 for going overdrawn and apparently it cost them £30 to send the letter.
Well now its the peoples turn. You can get your over inflated charges back. www.claimbackbankcharges.com do all the hard work. All you have to do is give them your bank details and name and address and they will get up to 6 years of bank statements, highlight the charges and go for the banks jugular and make them pay for a change.
Yeah it costs but only if they get money back. No hassle, one minute form sign up on www.claimbackbankcharges.com and there team of lawyers willg et the ball rolling.
Just think you could end up with nearly £200 if you were charged just once a year. Some people have gone on to claim back in excess of £1500.
What have you go to lose. Go to the website, have a read and tell me its not worth it.
Good luck and let me know how you get on.

2008 ASP World Tour Roster Elicits Excitement - Countdown Begins
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Wenesday, Jan. 30, 2008) – The 2008 ASP World Tour roster has been eliciting excitement among the surfers and ASP enthusiasts alike since the new Top 45 were confirmed last December. In three short weeks, the world will take a front row seat to what many are expecting to be a mind-blowing season.
The arrival of rookies Jordy Smith (ZAF) and Dane Reynolds (USA), an inspired Australian contingent (courtesy of Aussie Mick Fanning’s 2007 ASP World Title) and the undeniable depth of talent delivered by multiple ASP World Champions Andy Irons (HAW) and Kelly Slater (USA), are expected to catapult competitiveness in the lineup to an all-time high.
“I think the 2008 tour will be extra exciting,” Fanning said. “With all the new rookies and the usual suspects I think every one will turn it up another notch. As always, everyone will be super fired up and I am hoping this year will be the best ever on tour.”
There are 11 events scheduled on the 2008 ‘Dream Tour’ and after a rather lackluster season wave-wise in 2007, the world’s best are eager to start from scratch and return to idyllic locations like Australia, Tahiti and Fiji with another opportunity to ride the best waves on the planet. Courtesy of the ASP’s new ‘Dual Heats’ format, a Slater-inspired system, it is now possible to run close to twice as many heats in a day should conditions herald it.
“I do think it will be a tougher year competitively this year and the surf can’t be any worse than it was last season, so 2008 will definitely be a better year all around for the tour,” Slater said. “I’m sure Mick is going to be hungry to back up his title, the new guys will be hungry to make a statement, Andy is going to be hungry to find his place again, and as for me… I don’t think I’ll do a full year on the tour so I’m just going to have some fun.”
Slater has hinted at retirement for some time but is the first to admit that he has a hard time walking away from world-class conditions should the swell chart for an upcoming event call for them. He has confirmed his spot at the season-opener, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by LG.
Smith, who holds down the 34th place seed after finishing 1st on the 2007 ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), has lofty aspirations for his debut season. Having already made a Final in an ASP World Tour event as a wildcard (JBay in 2006), he is certainly one to watch.
“I would say that I am looking forward to gaining experience and doing my best,” Smith said. “I am just going to put my best foot forward and hope that I can link together some good results. That might see me in the Top 5.”
The 2008 ASP World Tour is comprised of 17 Australians, 14 Americans (five of which are Hawaiians) six Brazilians, four South Africans and four Europeans – the greatest number of elite tour surfers Europe has ever boasted.
"This year’s roster for the 2008 ASP Dream Tour is probably the most exciting we have had for some time,” ASP CEO Brodie Carr said. “We have the hottest guys on the planet all chomping at the bit to win the ASP World Title. Hold on to your leg rope it will be a hell of a ride."
The 2008 ASP World Tour will commence with the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast of Australia on Feb. 23.
The lineup for the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour has been finalized following the completion of the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour and ASP WQS seasons, the ASP wildcard being decided as well as the appropriate substitution being made for pregnancy.
The ASP Women’s World Tour is made up of the top 10 finishers from the previous season, the top 6 finishers on the ASP WQS as well as the ASP Wildcard, making for a total of 17 elite competitors. In the event of double qualification, a competitor qualifying through both the ASP Women’s World Tour and ASP WQS, the next surfer on the ASP WQS ratings is given the nod.
The ASP Wildcard is decided by a tech committee comprised of physicians, surfers and tour managers who review applications for a seed on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour. While it has historically been given to surfers who are unable to compete the previous season due to injury, it is not a prerequisite.
In the case of this season, the ASP tech committee deemed that the wildcard would be given to the next highest placing surfer on the ASP Women’s World Tour, Megan Abubo (HAW). Since Abubo had qualified already via her ASP WQS seed as well, this freed up another sport from the qualifying series for Julia De La Rosa Toro (PER).
Chelsea Hedges (AUS), former ASP Women’s World Champion, is pregnant and will sit out the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour season. Taking her place is the next highest placing surfer from the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour, South Africa’s Rosanne Hodge.
“My plan right now is to have 2008 off from the tour, relax and enjoy the experience of being pregnant (it will be nice to have a full year at home!),” Hedges said. “I plan to return to the ASP Women’s World Tour in 2009 with 100% support from my sponsor Roxy.”
Hodge, who narrowly missed officially qualifying for the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour by one heat, will put her stylish approach to good use in 2008, surfing for the pregnant Hedges.
“I was just really happy and relieved when I found out I would be back this season,” Hodge said. “I lost out on officially requalifying by such a small margin in Maui, and I was disappointed in that because in the last event, I finally found my feet and relaxed. I’m so stoked I got a second shot. I’m frothing to travel, surf, compete and get some results. I can’t wait for the first event to start.”
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, will be the marked surfer this season, having claimed her history-making title during her rookie year in ’07. With the influx of new surfers this season and the ever-increasing performance level, the champ forecasts for an exciting year.
“I haven’t really been thinking too much about this stuff yet, but I do know that every girl on the tour stepped up their performances a great deal last year and I can only see the level going higher again this year,” Gilmore said. “Hopefully 2008 will be full of waves that will allow us to do so. The girls to watch will be Silvana Lima, Sofia Mulanovich, Jessi Miley-Dyer and Karina Petroni – kind of a mix of experience and rookies in these girls is going to make them shine.”
The first event on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour will be the Roxy Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks from February 23 – March 6, 2008.

Aussie Wildcard Unleashes the Wright Stuff to Defeat Top Seed De Souza
SYDNEY, Australia (Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008) – Australian wildcard Owen Wright obliterated all hopes of a second ASP World Junior title for 2003 World Junior champion Adriano De Souza (BRA), with his sensational Round 3 victory at Sydney’s North Narrabeen beach, today.
Competing in monstrous three-meter waves at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships Wright, who earned his spot into the main event by winning the wildcard trials on Wednesday, posted the highest scoring wave of the day, a 9.67 (out of a possible 10.00) for a series of critical turns and a clean barrel ride.
“Adriano was scoring 7.00’s and 8.00’s and was up on me straight away,” Wright said, alluding to de Souza’s early heat lead. “I was getting pretty tense but I knew I had nothing to lose. I waited to pick my wave and was lucky to get a high score and advanced through to Round 4.”
Wright’s performance earned him a 16.50 heat total (out of a possible 20.00) to de Souza’s 15.50, in undoubtedly the most exciting heat of the day.
Fellow Australian Beau Atchison produced a dazzling performance five heats later, the fifth Australian seed securing the highest heat total of the entire event, a 17.40 to defeat fellow Aussie Matt Wilkinson (AUS).
“I felt really bad eliminating another Aussie, especially someone I’ve been surfing with all my life but someone’s got to take it out for Australia,” Atchison said.
Pablo Paulino (BRA) made up for his fellow countryman’s Round 3 elimination; the 2004 ASP World Junior Champion unleashing his usual repertoire of high risk, performance driven surfing, to defeat Tamaroa McComb (PYF) with a 15.83 total heat score.
“I was very disappointed when Adriano lost out,” Paulino lamented. “I’d hoped for an all Brazilian Final but I will try to achieve our collective dream of winning a second World Junior title, to match Joel Parkinson (two time winner of the event).”
Nineteen-year-old Julian Wilson (AUS) played a tactically smart heat, his rock solid performance and 15. 55 total heat score, resulting in a thrashing for American surfer Nick Rosza (USA), who was eliminated with just 7.17 points.
“It was really tricky out there,” Wilson explained. “It was just a matter of who was going to get the better waves and I guess I was just a little more selective.”
The Hawaiian surfers suffered an uncharacteristically poor showing in the double overhead surf; Tonino Benson (Haw) the only advancing surfer of the six competing.
“I think there’s a big difference between big reef breaks and big sand bars and that’s why the Hawaiians had a bit of trouble today,” Benson said. “There are a few waves similar to this where I live; I think that gave me an advantage today.”
The South African surfers revealed their proficiency in bigger surf and were responsible for two of the five Hawaiian casualties.
Rudy Palmboom disposed of Clay Marzo (HAW) while Brandon Jackson took down Hawaii’s top seed Casey Brown (HAW).
Other surprise upsets included Europe’s Romain Cloitire (FRA) who defeated top American surfer Adam Wickwire (USA) and Germany’s Nicolau Von Rupp eliminating Mason Ho (HAW).
The large surf saw jet ski assistance in the line-up for the first time in the event’s history, towing surfers back out to the back after each ride.
The event was also highlighted by the presence of current World No. 4 Joel Parkinson (AUS) and 1999 ASP World Champion Mark Occhilupo (AUS) who came down to support the juniors.
A total field of 48 junior men, 18 junior women plus four wildcards from eight surfing regions feature in this year’s Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.
The event will be broadcast live via the internet on www.billabongpro.com

I have looked on the net today and have found many of the retail stores online offering surf gear and ridiculous prices. Some places are selling gear with offers of over 70% off.
I would recommend checking out your usual sites if you are interested in a new board or a new wetsuit pronto.

Dangers of Big Wave Surfing
In a big wave wipeout, a breaking wave can push surfers down 20 to 50 (6.2 m to 15.5 m) feet below the surface. Once they stop spinning around, they have to quickly regain their equilibrium and figure out which way is up. They may have less than 20 seconds to get to the surface for a breath of air before the next wave hits them. Additionally, the water pressure at a depth of 20-50 feet can be strong enough to rupture one's eardrums. Strong currents and water action at those depths can also slam a surfer into a reef or even the floor, which can result in severe injuries or even death.
One of the greatest dangers is the risk of being held down by two or more consecutive waves without the chance to reach the surface for air. Surviving a triple hold-down is extremely difficult which is why it is important to know how to swim out of these situations.
Despite these hazards, very few big-wave surfers have ever died in the practice of the sport, with the notable exceptions of Mark Foo, who died surfing Mavericks on December 23rd, 1994, Donnie Solomon, who died exactly a year later at Waimea Bay, and Todd Chesser who died at Alligator Rock on the North Shore of Oahu on February 14th, 1997. A possible explanation for the relatively low fatality rate is experience; most big-wave surfers are highly skilled in the water and have likely trained themselves to handle the difficult conditions.

Reef Stash Sandals
Summer is here, and we all know how careless we get with keys and wallets, especially when we go swimming (most swimming trunks don’t have pockets). This is now a problem of the past. This summer get a pair of the Stash sandals from reef. Just like the name, you can stash cash, credit cards, and keys among other things in a pullout drawer located in the sole of the sandal. I wonder what happens when you step on water, or is the pull-out drawer waterproof? The sandals are available in brown, black, light grey and taupe.

Rip Curl Renault Clio
Renowned surf and snowboard specialist Rip Curl has added its trademark styling to the Clios attractive, dynamic lines and the Rip Curl Clio features special Iceberg Blue paintwork and, optionally, 16-inch alloy wheels. The interior has a sporting feel, too, with bright red flourishes forming a spectacular contrast to a deep black backdrop. Practical and comfortable, the cabin is perfect for those who love the great outdoors. The Rip Curl Clio features equipment that is 100 per cent designed for beach or piste: the special rubber flooring and rigid boot box are impervious to sand or snow.
The Rip Curl Clio is also 100% dedicated to music, with an Audio Connection Box that links mobile music players to the in-car entertainment system. The two available engines – the TCE 100hp and 1.5 dCi FAP – are environmentally sensitive and ripe with innovations. They combine driving pleasure with low fuel consumption and emissions. This underlines Renault’s responsible attitude towards the environment as it seeks to reduce greenhouse gases and build cars that are 95 per cent recyclable by weight.
The Rip Curl Clio highlights a strong bond between Renault and Rip Curl – a long-term commitment that will evolve in the years to come. The two companies share a passion for freedom and mobility and are committed to respecting and protecting the planet. They will collaborate with an abundance of good humour and artistic creativity and the partnership stands out as different, offset approach to both the product and communicating.
Clio has been a major success for Renault’s designers. Its compact lines are simultaneously dynamic, robust, flowing and attractive. For this limited edition model, Renault handed its paintbrushes and spray guns to Rip Curl, whose artists were able to express their sensitivity and graphic flair. Clio’s protective side strips are embellished with the Rip Curl motif and the hatchback incorporates an original graphic incorporating the brand’s name. The Rip Curl Clio is also the first Renault to feature a new body colour, Iceberg Blue, which provides a neat link between glacier and ocean.
Inside, the emphasis has been placed on comfort and alluring décor. Attention to detail is a Rip Curl trademark: the bespoke trim includes red inserts on the dash panel which complement the sides of the seats, anti-slip door sill strips and Rip Curl insignia on the front headrest tags and centre console facia.
Standard features tailored to young adventurers 100% action: the specification includes equipment designed especially for younger drivers, their hobbies and their thirst for adventure. Hence the rubber floor mats in the front and the storage box in the boot. The latter is big enough to accommodate all the kit you’ll need for your snow or surf trip.
100% music: located in the glovebox, the Audio Connection Box provides a direct link between iPods®/MP3 players (via USB or jack) and the car stereo, which has steering wheel-mounted controls.
100% voyager: occupants are well catered for in the user-friendly, comfortable cabin. Clio remains the benchmark within its segment.
A range of engine options underlines the Rip Curl Clio’s dynamism and driver appeal. It also reaffirms Renault’s commitment to developing environmentally sensitive technology. The new TCE 100hp (73kW) engine is fitted with a low-inertia turbo and delivers remarkable performance, because it combines the power of a 1.4-litre engine with the torque of a 1.6 (145Nm) and the economy of a 1.2 (the 650rpm idling speed helps save fuel). Its CO2 emissions are rated at just 140g/km and it has been developed to set new performance and economy standards within this power band. Its true capacity is just 1,149cc and this tiny jewel is more economical than any rival engine in the combined cycle, where the Rip Curl Clio returns 5.9l/100km. The Rip Curl Clio is also available with a 1.5 dCi 85hh diesel engine with particulate filter: in this guise it emits 126g/km of CO2 and sips fuel at just 4.8l/100km (58.9mpg) in the combined cycle. Another new, ecologically sound development, the filter features an injector within the exhaust system. It’s a shrewd innovation that was subject to a number of patent applications during its evolution. In keeping with consumer demands, the Rip Curl Clio is available with a range of clean, thrifty engines to enhance its environmental credentials. The Rip Curl Clio is also 95 per cent recyclable by weight, which illustrates that Renault shares its partner’s real-world cares and concerns.
The Rip Curl Clio limited edition heralds the dawn of a multi-year partnership and this commitment is founded on three pillars: a common passion for freedom and mobility, a commitment to safety and environmental respect and creative forward thinking.
For each partner, this is a fresh approach to both the product and communicating. It’s a tough challenge, but potentially very rewarding.
- Renault will put its automotive know-how, all-round excellence and industrial power at the disposal of a rising brand and its armada of young fans who love surfing, snowboarding, music and the planet. Renault has placed its confidence in the Australian company’s creative talents, who have put the finishing touches to this limited edition model and contributed significantly to the original launch announcement. Furthermore, Renault will join Rip Curl in supporting surfing in Europe and protecting sensitive areas where the sport takes place (Rip Curl Planet Project).
- Rip Curl brings Renault its slightly off-the-wall creativity and a taste for innovation. This leading surf brand is renowned for its technical prowess and is also a byword for dependability in its field. Still privately owned, Rip Curl retains its spirit of adventure and even has its own lifestyle ethos, known as 'The Search'.
The Rip Curl Clio is, ultimately, a form of expression using words and styling cues that will be familiar to surfers and snowboarders. It is blessed with a healthy dose of irreverence and should under no circumstances be taken too seriously. The Renault Rip Curl Clio insignia symbolises an unusual – but incredibly dynamic – crossbreed.
